What’s the difference between an ordinary baker and an extraordinary one? Given the same resources, an ordinary baker is most likely to take out sweet-smelling bread from the kiln while the extraordinary baker, on the other hand, has something greater cooking in the oven: success.

For Julie Gandioco, owner of Julie’s Bakeshop who baked fresh ideas for the industry, both came in easy—producing good quality bread and achieving success in her field—as she had incorporated her initial entrepreneurial gleanings and the value of family solidarity in her current enterprise.

Gandioco, who once worked as a seamstress for relatives, friends, and neighbors and a canteen concessionaire while still in high school, had only two major priorities in life: her family and business. When she established the first store of Julie’s Bakeshop in Cebu in 1981, she concocted these priorities and got a sweeter slice of life.

“I am very proud of my children. Since day one, they have been there helping me to make possibilities for our business. All was involved thus we moved forward,” said Gandioco, pointing out that while she started the business, her husband and five children were the movers.

Gandioco’s brainchild has benefited millions, especially those with a sweet tooth for merienda, by providing an alternative to high-end breads and pastries. She has made her business ubiquitous as there seems to be a Julie’s branch present in every corner.

To date, there are 514 branches of Julie’s Bakeshop nationwide. All Julie’s Bakeshops offer a vast variety of snacks hunger-solvers, from ensaymadas to mamons to macaroons, cakes and empanadas. The shops, according to Gandioco, ensure that the ingredients they use are only the finest and that foodstuffs are produced in a clean environment.

Recently, Julie won, for the second time, the Outstanding Filipino Franchise of the Year from the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA). The franchise is now elevated to the PFA Hall of Fame, joining an elite circle of past winners such as Jollibee, McDonalds, Bench, Marks and Spencer and Max’s Restaurant.

Gandioco said she ultimately owes the success of Julie’s to her family, especially her children who were guided by her principles of being unity in whatever undertaking, and fostering warm customer and employee relations.

“You must have the patience and heart to handle them,” she said. “My first baker who has been with us for all our 25 years is still treating our patrons goodies fresh from the oven.”

On June 26, the 75-year-old Gandioco, who remains hands-on in dealing with her business, will be conferred by the Philippine Center of Entrepreneurship the award of most inspiring Cebuano entrepreneur at the Go Negosyo Entrepreneurship Conference, the latest leg of the continuing Go Negosyo campaign spearheaded by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III, slated in her hometown at the Cebu International Convention Center.

The Go Negosyo sa Cebu, which is chaired by Jay Aldeguer, owner of the famous Islands Souvenirs, is the first destination of the Go Negosyo Caravan, which brings Go Negosyo forums and expositions in key cities outside Metro Manila.

In partnership with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) through the support of CCCI President Francis Monera and Consul Sam Chioson, the Go Negosyo sa Cebu is part of the month-long celebration of the Cebu Business Month.

When The Queen City of the South needed upgrading for technological development, one man took heed of an “all systems go” vision, accordingly booting the computer systems of Cebu to high-speed success. This man would soon be recognized as the genius behind today’s preferred local systems integration company in Cebu and Northern Mindanao.

Wilson Ng, Founder and President of Ng Khai Development Corporation, has always been passionate when it comes to entrepreneurship and computer technology since his college days in the University of the Philippines in Cebu, where he took up business management. Back then, he already knew that information technology would soon take a front seat in the way businesses are done, hence the decision to pursue a career path in that direction.

After graduating in 1989, he worked in Taiwan as a programmer, an opportunity which enriched further his know-how and experience in the field of technology. He returned home and established Ng Khai, which started out as a computer software company, in 1992.

“After some time, there was an increase in the demands of the customers so we broadened our product base to become Cebu’s one-stop shop for integrated IT business solutions,” narrated Ng, who disclosed that his IT dream was momentarily put on hold as he took charge of his family’s food business when his father passed away.

Over the years, Ng Khai has progressed to keep up with the dynamic IT industry. Ng Khai now employs over 120 IT professionals to service its growing clientele. The business has a coordinating office in Manila and contracts with companies in the United Kingdom, US, and Japan.

Ng Khai has partnered with global IT brands such as Canon, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, and IBM to guarantee the premiere quality of the services and equipment it provides its customers. Ng Khai is the only Microsoft Large Account Reseller in the South, and is the exclusive Visayas distributor of 3M Visual products.

“Through Ng Khai, I want to boost the Southern Philippines’ economy by making it attractive to investors as outsourcing sites,” Ng said. “I believe that young Filipino professionals outside the National Capital Region should have equal opportunities to work in their provinces and not have to go to Manila or overseas to find suitable employment.”

Ng has also founded e*Sprint Software, a spin-off that produces business management solutions for small and medium companies here and abroad. e*Sprint has recently ventured with Innovista Technologies to form E-vista Techonologies, a new outfit aiming to introduce the e*Sprint products to Metro Manila.

The 2004 Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year, Ng will be presented by the Philippine Center of Entrepreneurship the award of most inspiring Cebuano entrepreneur at the Go Negosyo Entrepreneurship Conference, the latest leg of the continuing Go Negosyo campaign spearheaded by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III, slated at the Cebu International Convention Center.

The Go Negosyo sa Cebu, which is chaired by Jay Aldeguer, owner Islands Souvenirs, is the first destination of the Go Negosyo Caravan, which brings Go Negosyo forums and expositions in key cities outside Metro Manila.

In partnership with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) through the support of CCCI President Francis Monera and Consul Sam Chioson, the Go Negosyo sa Cebu is part of the month-long celebration of the Cebu Business Month.

After attending a couple of writing workshops conducted by renowned literati Butch Dalisay, wherein words enjoy abundance and a generous supply of red wine serves as a treat for students, HR man Alfredo Damian had already in mind a clear picture of his post-retirement life. He would like to continue such productive sessions, but this time with him providing tutelage and popping corks to fill the cups of his protégés.

For almost the lifetime of Punongbayan & Araullo (P&A), one of the country’s leading accounting firms, Damian has worked as the head of the firm’s personnel department head, him being one of P&A’s seven pioneers. He has functioned accordingly as he recruited top-of-the-line accountants and auditors, allowing P&A the surge to become an industry leader. Also, several programs that honed and showcased the potentials of P&A employees could be accounted to his inclusive management.

But now that he is turning 60 (this year), Damian’s prominence in P&A comes to a close as retirement awaits him.

“It’s required in our rules that after the fiscal year when you become 60 you have to retire,” said Damian. “And I think it’s a good time to do so because since day one I’ve already been working non-stop.”

After retirement, Damian intends to settle in his retirement house in Bacoor, Cavite and establish an office there where he would hold writing workshops. This office, according to Damian, who is a self-confessed cat lover, shall be complemented by a small aviary of cats which he would call “Cat-mandu” (pun of Nepal’s capital city).

Comes now a difficult nut to crack. Why in the world would someone who specializes in numbers—and people relations, too—want to pursue a life dealing with words?

To that, Damian has a brief response: “I always stood to what I thought were some communication abilities I had which I developed simply because I just like it.”

Since childhood, Damian has always been fascinated with the aptness of words and the correctness of grammar; declaiming to carabaos in a long way home from school was never even an issue for him, just so that his spoken English get polished.

From there, Damian would continue his “wordy” musings, starting a personal writing life, which he extended by joining the Essay category of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. But, as humbly confessed by Damian, joining the Palanca remains to be one of the biggest disappointments of his life, for literary glory stays suspended up until now.

Damian’s career in P&A began with a seemingly ambitious instruction from the firm’s co-founder, Benjamin Punongbayan: Hire the best people for us. As Damian, who at that time boasts of a reputable standing in executive search and personnel management, needless to say, in audit and accountancy as well, had in himself a certain slant for English fluency, he saw it important to go beyond the credentials of his recruits in order to bring in to P&A the crème of the crop. Aside from the with-honors status of his “chosen ones,” he, too, gave weighty notice to their utmost familiarity of the English language, using it as the means to express clear-cut organization of their thoughts.

“In the long run, assuming we all get good material—they know their accounting, they could learn new standards, all topnotchers—what will differentiate those who would reach the top would be their ability to deal with people and their communication skills,” Damian said.

“Good communication skills speak of confidence,” he added.

Incidentally, this was also how Punongbayan envisioned the edge that he wanted P&A people to have. Punongbayan opted for his associates to be distinguished not just by superb accounting and auditing skills but also through their effectiveness as communicators, for he deems that to develop solid communication skills would be advantageous as for global competitiveness. With this Punongbayan’s vision, Damian indeed exemplifies a perfect partner.

And what is a perfect partner without a legacy to be remembered for? To be regarded as a major contributor in observing the importance of sound communication in the success of each of the firm’s workforce is how Damian wants his legacy depicted, finally justifying one of his work’s principle.

For yet another personal legacy: To revisit the vastness that is the English language as host to several men and women, accounting and non-accounting people alike.

What Milk Code?
Milk companies caught breaking the law in sheepskin

Marketing ploy comes in handy for some infant formula manufacturers amid a strong pro-breastfeeding campaign which has already created a culture for a following, consequently threatening milk substitutes to oblivion. Such driving force has allowed milk companies to go around the provisions of Executive Order 51, otherwise known as the Milk Code, which rests as a cornerstone for the “breastfeeding is best for babies” advocacy, at the same time penetrate a good share of their supposed public—in a subliminal and devious means.

As stated in the Milk Code, “no advertising, promotion or other marketing materials and activities for breastmilk substitutes intended for infants and young children up to 24 months shall be allowed.” This order manifests a godly stance, all-powerful and encompassing. But like the Israelites who once worshipped a golden calf at the foot of Mt. Sinai, milk companies have found their way to be defiant of the law for the gains neither of mothers nor babies but of their crusade to commercial supremacy.

In Cagayan Valley, reports have been verified that Wyeth Nutrition, a manufacturer and distributor of nutritional products, has deployed some of its crew to survey pediatricians in the area by disseminating Q&A leaflets. According to the report, pediatricians who answered and gave back the questionnaires to Wyeth representatives were, in return, gifted giveaways (i.e. Wyeth tumblers, etc.), an act which clearly violates the provision abovementioned; more so promotes the products of Wyeth shadily.

A separate but similar account took place in La Union, where the same milk company held an event tagged La Union Buntis Day. In the gathering, mothers were wooed with different gift items from Wyeth and were later on subjected to the promotion of Bonna, Wyeth’s infant formula milk. Not only did the event defy the Milk Code but also The World Health Assembly International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, which affirms the prohibition of any form of promotion that seeks for direct or indirect contact with mothers.

Further, Wyeth took its hand at sampling—a no-no still incorporated in EO 51—as it provided the Ilocos Training Regional Medical Center free 180-gram packs of powdered milk through the Center’s Pediatrics Department. Rumor had it that these free samples were sold by doctors to patients. The sampling made was untraceable as there were no signed papers that could serve as material proof.

Milk magnate Mead Johnson, on the other hand, had gone from sponsoring European trips for pediatricians in exchange of their prescription of Alactamil, MJ’s starter milk, to deceiving consumers that theirs is the cheapest instant formula in the market, when in fact, if closely computed per feed (the number of scoops one needs to make a milk-filled bottle), it is the most expensive. In addition to this, Alactamil’s main ingredient has been disclosed to be corn syrup instead of milk, which should be the chief component of infant formulas. Health issues may then arise as the early intake of sugar (from corn syrup) can result to an untimely acquisition of the so-called “sweet tooth” which entails a preference of sugary yet unhealthy food.

Into sampling as well, MJ introduced a promo of giving free vitamins and other baby necessities (e.g. cotton) upon a P150 purchase of its products. Too, it remains heavy on giveaways, including mechanized massagers in its list of freebies to be handed out to loyal patrons.

Ever wondered what’s the difference of Bona from Bonamil from Bonakid from Bonaline? How about Alactamil from Alactagrow? Enfakid from Enfagrow? Yet another marketing strategy plotted by the milk companies. Can there be no observance of the One-Brand policy so as to avoid advertising’s power of establishing a name recall even in the light of confusion? (A research concluded that 50% of mothers are influenced massively by advertising in choosing their starter milks, not by friends, families, or even doctors.) This trickery pits the consumer to buying infant formula milk having the brands of growing-up formulas—which are not covered by the Milk Code—that are closely related to them.

As these facts have been unraveled, mothers may be left shaking their heads in front of grocery shelves where in sight are myriad choices for the nourishment of their babies. But wait, there’s more to shake: how about Alactamil’s box, just to check if the content slips not from one side to another. What, it does? Another magic of marketing, perhaps: packaging 180 grams of foiled powdered milk in a box capable of containing more.

Go to DV for your surfer shorts
and other tips to save money on summer breakouts

The summer sun is again wide among us. People are headed for Baguio and the beaches to cool down for a much needed break. In times like this, breakouts are deemed blissful even if, as we go sun-baked, it means getting our whitening soap-treated skin a bit of a tan. And this is not the primary letdown of summer getaways. The major burn, which exceeds integumentary health, comes right after we realize how summer has dried our pockets penniless the moment we swim the seas or scour the streets of the country’s Summer Capital for some ukay-ukay quests.

We are all acquainted that sunburns can be prevented by Coppertone. But how about the burnout of our summer stipends? Tax managers from one of the country’s top accounting firms, Punongbayan & Araullo (P&A), offer their two cents worth on this, imparting strategies to cut cost during the summer holiday. Listed below are their expert tips.

Know your budget. Because more than anything else, your budget directs your summer adventures, it is essential for you to assure and reassure its apportionment for your trips. There are several aspects to consider when planning out the budget: accommodation, food, transportation (gasoline), and other miscellaneous costs (i.e. drinks for boozing, other activities (banana boating, jet skiing), pasalubong, etc. ). Among these, food usually consumes much of the total budget, sometimes ballooning to almost four times the sum allotted for transportation, according to our P&A budget specialists.

Scout for places. To help lessen expenditures, it is advised to find a place that is both enjoyable and economical. As the Net continuously proves to be an unlimited tank of information, it may aid you in pinpointing that perfect place for your perfect holiday voyage. Several websites which list suggested summer spots with corresponding budget estimations just might do the trick. Seeking the support of travel agents could be of great help, too.

The DV method. Walking ashore with your feet adorned by Havianas perhaps may be luxurious but never necessary. Let us be reminded that the main reason to go summer beach-ing is not to parade Oakley shades or Nike surfer shorts or Body Glove watches, rather to delight in the sanctuary brought by the sand and the waves (save if you have the pomposity vast as the ocean). Spare yourself the commercial hassle of scoring exorbitantly priced signature apparel and simply settle for cheap yet decent brands sold somewhere in, say, Divisoria. After all, as one P&A tax manager puts it, “People won’t really care what you wear in the beach. Isn’t it that they go naked in Bora?”

Avoid impulsive buying. The main cause of overspending is impulsive buying. As a lot of things will get the vision of your materialistic eye as you go on with your trip, you must practice the art of controlling the urge to purchase. If an item attempts to grab you by the last hundred-peso bills in your wallet, think and re-think if it is really worth the cashing in. With this tip comes also the moderation of buying pasalubong for everyone back home—why give away P300-souvenir tees when you could pull through with the it’s-the-thought-that-counts excuse complemented with a bottle of peanut brittle?

‘Enjoy the summer heat.’ Our P&A financial experts then converge to one foolproof conclusion: “There can really be no perfect budget plan for your trips. It could serve to estimations but at the end of the day, it’s the company [of the people you are with] that matters. Do enjoy the summer heat while it lasts.”

It takes a man, captain of his soul, to tame oceans and make the waves serve his purpose. And what took Carlos Salinas to rev the rotor of the country’s maritime industry is the drive to channel Filipinos as unsinkable professionals of the seven seas.

Once, the task to market Filipino seafarers loomed impossible as international seamen dominated the shipping industry, which accounts to over 90 percent of the total world trade. Salinas was aware that ships are usually registered in other countries, ran by a management company from a third country, with an international complement of seafarers. He obviously needed a momentous mechanism to make the sea a favorable workplace for the Filipino.

In February 1979, after years of working for a shipping company in New York and pursuing maritime studies and training at the School of World Trade, Salinas established the Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. (PTC), a company that would soon be renowned as one of the largest manning companies in the Philippines.

All-Filipino crew

PTC started with a 100-square meter office, three ships, a staff of six, and a deployment of 72 seafarers, and Salinas’ nautical expertise. Today, the company provides comprehensive service to the Far East, U.S., Europe, Middle East, and Scandinavia.

“We are now operating with a staff of over 200 personnel, deploying over 24,000 professional seafarers in partnership with a wide number of ship owners worldwide,” shared Salinas. Their office can now be found in a 10-storey building erected in Makati.

A year after its establishment, a leading Norwegian ship owner employed 24 PTC-trained professionals to take command of its brand new car carrier—the first ever acquisition of an all-Filipino crew. This breakthrough triggered the confidence of the Norwegians and other foreign ship owners to begin fully relying on the capability of the Filipino seafarers.

Following up its initial success, PTC was able to send 40 selected Filipino officers and engineers to Scandinavia to undergo rigid training preparatory to taking over three of the most modern vessels built at that time.

There are over 20,000 Filipinos from various companies on board Norwegian vessels and a total deployment hitting the 25 percent-mark of the world’s fleet.

Multi-awarded

The historic entry of PTC in the Philippine maritime industry would have remained imaginary if not for the leadership of Salinas, its chair and CEO.

Salinas, who was once the Vice President of the International Shipping Federation, also acts as Chairman and President of the Filipino Shipowners’ Association, an honor held previously by only two men since the Association was founded in the 1950s. In addition, he is associated with numerous representations for the maritime field locally and internationally.

In 1993, Salinas brought honor to the country when he was conferred by His Majesty, Harald V, King of Norway, the Royal Order of Merit with rank of Commander, for his pioneering effort in promoting Norwegian shipping interests in the Philippines and for his valuable contributions to the development and advancement of Philippine-Norwegian maritime relations. This made him the first Filipino and only the third Asian to secure this singular award of distinction.

The following year, 1994, Salinas was awarded by the Philippine Maritime Industry the Timonel Award, the highest plum granted to private individuals for services rendered to the government in the development of the maritime industry. He was recognized by the Department of Transportation and Communication for his vision and contributions to the promotion of the Philippine overseas shipping industry, and for his support and assistance in the establishment of the International Maritime Organization Regional Presence for Technical Cooperation in East Asia.

PTC has been consistently recognized and awarded by the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment for its exemplary performance in the deployment and career management of its seafarers.

‘Kayod-Marino’

Was there a need then to go beyond PTC even if its revolutionary deals were a dry land for shipwrecked sailors? Had this question been asked a decade ago, Salinas would have given its due answer in bold letters: PHLICAMSAT.

Aiming to further escalate PTC’s intentions and boost the morale of Pinoy seafarers, Salinas in 1992 set up the Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training (PHILCAMSAT) as organizational support to his initial venture.

Powered by the latest technology available, and a system of state-of-the-art simulators, PHILCAMSAT took on the rigidity of concertedly training Filipino seafarers, prepping them to be effective laborers, more so, to advance to high-level positions as Captain and Officers on board.

The Center, too, schooled the seafarers as it offered various courses related to their field. According to Salinas, the complete course list, which goes from ship simulator courses to cargo handling to IT to catering and culinary and so on, could be downloaded from its website, http://www.philcamsat.com.ph.

“For the Filipino seafarer, only through continuous development can we achieve a brighter future. There is no substitute for hard work. The sacrifices of yesterday and today will undoubtedly reap tremendous benefits for our country and for our people in the future,” Salinas said.?”
